Information for Prospective Ski Patrollers (Trail Crew)
Mt Ashland Ski Patrol’s candidates are referred to as our “Trail Crew”.
Patrolling at Mt. Ashland is a lot of fun. It is also a lot of work.We are largely a volunteer Patrol. We take a lot of pride in our performance and work hard to maintain the high standards expected of us by area management, the public, and most importantly, ourselves. We appreciate your interest in becoming a member of our Patrol and hope the following information will help you understand what we are looking for in our Trail Crew.
Trail Crew Selection
The criteria for selection of Trail Crew will include positive attitude and appropriate basic skills. Prospective Trail Crew will participate in a 4 day period of participation in daily Patrol activities. After 4 days of working with various Patrollers in many aspects of Patrolling, an evaluation will be made. The prospective Trail Crew will decide if Patrolling with the Mt Ashland Ski Patrol is something that they are willing and able to pursue. Our Patrol will also have a chance to decide if Patrolling with us is a realistic goal for the prospective member.
Training
An Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) course is required by Mt Ashland Ski Patrol and the National Ski Patrol. This is a first aid course taught by Patrollers. OEC requires a significant commitment of time and energy. A challenge is possible for applicants with advanced medical training and current active involvement with EMS.
Training will begin with the initial 4 day involvement with the Mt. Ashland Ski Patrol, and will cover most Patrol responsibilities and operations. Our on the hill training is involved with Skiing and/or Boarding, Rescue Toboggan Handling, all mountain rescue including Rope rescue, and area knowledge. Training includes all area policies, lifts, mountain set-up, maintenance, and closing.
Cost
Expenses in the first year will include annual National/Division/Regional dues, currently $75.00. There will be a one-time fee of approximately $125 to $150 to cover OEC books and OEC registration fees. New Trail Crew will be expected to provide their own personal equipment including a red shell and black pants. Uniform vests for Patrollers are currently $130. Uniform vests are required for all Patrollers. Initial First Aid supplies are the Patroller’s responsibility.
Duties
Upon successful completion of required training and a satisfactory demonstration of competency in Patroller skills, new volunteer Patrollers will be issued a season pass for themselves and each of their family dependents. All Patrollers are required to be on duty a minimum of 1 day per week during the ski season. Duty days start at 8:00 a.m. and continue until released by the Hill Captain at the end of the day, usually about 5:00 p.m. All Patrollers are required to remain on duty in the event of a search and rescue mission unless excused by the Hill Captain. All Trail Crew and Patrollers are expected to attend monthly in-town Patrol meetings during the season. Not withstanding the personal demands and initial costs, Patrolling at Mt. Ashland is fun and rewarding. We will do our best to see that your experience with the Patrol is both.
